Having been announced earlier this year, Zack Snyder will head back to the movies with Rebel Moon in 2023 — a large-scale sci-fi spectacle that’ll put Snyder’s mark all over a galaxy far, far away. Snyder is best known for works like 300, Watchmen, and Justice League so his perspective on sci-fi action will no doubt provide some punchy scenes of violence and compelling world-building.
This is the culmination of Snyder’s long-standing fascination with epic visual storytelling, which seems to be a spiritual successor or companion piece to the grand space operas of older times. With a sneak peek courtesy of Netflix, here are the things that ensure Rebel Moon rises above in the sci-fi space and remains one of the most discussed movies of 2022.
Plot Overview
Rebel Moontranspires in a far-off galaxy and centers on Kora, a young girl who lives on a peaceful colony at the edge of the galaxy. For generations, the farmers and settlers of the colony have known a high level of harmony between them, until Admiral Noble from Tzuq comes in to mold their peaceful society into an everlasting civilization meant to benefit his military empire –The Imperium-lovingly ruled by Emperor Peppercorn. Awaiting the forces of the Imperium which are coming to conquer and dominate, Kora is instructed to bring warriors from nearby planets to most assuredly fight back.
Differing from his Blood Pack brethren, Kora has a drive to form his own ragtag band of fighters that span through experienced warriors to those who don’t fit anywhere and pulls together the beginnings of a resistance against the Imperium. Rebel Moon is the story of a peaceful colony that finds itself facing terror from above and daily attacks against their way of life, spiraling toward civil war.
It’s about the people who rise up in answer to what they cannot abide; themes which he says are relevant today: “the rising anti-democratic forces on this planet by persons for whom violence is an aesthetic” as well as their opponents – those unwilling to be subsumed by them yet willing to take dictation from their own desire.
Cast & Performances
Sofia Boutella is at the heart of Rebel Moon as Kora. But Boutella infuses the part with both strength and vulnerability, giving Kora dimension so that viewers can get behind her as a dynamic lead. She simply shines throughout the film, nailing those emotional beatsthat mix the utter terror she feels for her people while juxtaposing it with an incredible strength to confront tyranny head-on. With her performance at the center, she gives this film a protagonist to rally behind amongst all of the noise.
Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, and Ray Fisher are key members of the ragtag resistance. Hunnam is appropriately grizzled and charismatic as Kai, a battle-hardened veteran whose presence adds some dimension to the group dynamics. General Titus played by Hounsou adds an air of importance to the cause with Bristol embodying the fighting spirit in Darrian Bloodaxe and playing a huge part in what are very well-designed, explosive action beats across the movie.
Ed Skrein is perfect as the bad guy Admiral Noble, head of the Imperium. Thus, an overall likable villain that the audience loves to hate is improved by his menacing presence and vigour..
Direction & Cinematography
Rebel Moon from Zack Snyder is an incredibly epic premise. Snyder is known for his specific visual style and once again he does not let down with visuals that at least look good in the movie. Every single frame is meticulously executed from epic sweeping vistas of alien planets to grimy, high-actionfirefights. The action sequences, a Snyder hallmark, are particularly dynamic and sumptuously framed– choreographed combat that pulses with the sensation of steel grinding on steel.
Larry Fong (300, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice) handles the cinematography and his work here is fantastic. Rich, lushly detailed set design and wide shots render the vast scale of the Rebel Moon universe more effectively than drones. Allowing his work to capture the star-warring grandiosity yet also remain in intimate closeup, Fong brings well-fleshed-out emotional stakes to unnamed characters doing battle before we realize they are named.
One of the more memorable aspects of Rebel Moon is how Snyder marries practical effects with CGI to craft a tangible world that makes sense This attention to detail in the design of the film, from spaceships to alien species, makes this galaxy feel big and rich with varied cultures.
Writing & Themes
Based on a story by Zack Snyder, Shay Hatten, and Kurt Johnstad from a screenplay also by Snyder, Hatten, and Johnstad, Waters is Equal Parts new Variant Similar prison break. Perhaps the most conventional of Snyder’s movies, his take on the band of rebels fighting back against an oppressive empire — a classic sci-fi trope otherwise known as being “the pitch for Star Wars” — is nuanced not through plot but in terms of character and world-building.
When developing Rebel Moon — a space saga influenced by classic sci-fi epics Star Wars and Dune as well as iconic filmmaker Akira Kurosawa— Zack Snyder was excited about the possibility of showing people his unconstrained vision in a way he had not done since 2009. In fact, the idea for the film began as a pitch that Snyder gave to Lucasfilm for a standalone Star Wars project, before eventually becoming its own universe.
Rebel Moon, for example is at its heart about a band of rebels rising up to fight for freedom. Its themes of unity, sacrifice and defiance against tyranny have a timeless quality that remains relevant to modern audiences. The film also delves into the theme of found family, with Kora’s ragtag band of fighters all joining together not just as comrades but as a community united in one goal.
Music & Sound Design
The film’s tone is accompanied by the score, composed by Junkie XL (Tom Holkenborg). The music enhances the drama of cataclysmic battle scenes and then turns down to drive home emotional, melodic themesduring more tender moments. Utilizing a full orchestra for Rebel Moon, combined with elements of futuristic electronics, establishes a sonic imprint as large as the scale of an epic like this.
Sound design, also, is an integral part of the movie. Each sound, from the roar of spaceships to the clash of weapons in combat, seems purposeful and grand. The aural world-building only deepens the feeling that you have been whisked away to some alien galaxy.
Critical Reception
Rebel Moon seems to have had a combination of reviews from both critics and audiencessimilarly. Some have praised the film for being a bold and ambitious world-builder, featuring strong performances as well as Zack Snyder’s distinct visual style, while others have criticized the pacing of the movie. Clocking in at more than two and a half hours, the film will likely drag for some during its softer, character-focused scenes.
But given Snyder’s fandom and the synergy between him and Netflix, fans of his work up until now will likely still find plenty to enjoy in Rebel Moon– a galaxy-spanning epic on the scale and look, opening up a new universe to explore. The vast and somewhat post-apocalyptic world the film created appears to be a treasure trove of potential sequels or expanded universes, among other praise. Reactions to the news have been mixed; many praised Netflix for making such quick-acting decisions, while others bemoaned the decision as shortsighted.
Conclusion
I cannot wait to see what is in store for us when we finally get that sprawling sci-fi epic from Zack Snyder, because with Rebel Moon he will deliver another unforgettable gem as only his fans know how. Story-wise, it might not be regular to Grammys but engaging characters, awesome fights and proper world-building all add up a piece to create this galaxy opera.
