Based on one of India’s covert operations in the 1970s, “Mission Majnu” is a Bollywood spy thriller. Based on true events, the exciting storyline that unfolds in Key – a film directed by Shantanu Bagchi — highlights how the Indian intelligence community played a vital role during the challenging geopolitical times. Featuring Sidharth Malhotra as an undercover agent, the film successfully blends thrilling action scenes with underlying emotions, grounded in a historical backdrop.
Plot Overview
Based in India in the 1970s against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan conflict, Mission Majnu is inspired by real events and follows RAW agent Amandeep Singh embarking on a covert mission in Pakistan. He was assigned a project to collect all important information about the nuclear program of Pakistan which is a big threat to India!
A tailor by day (who runs his dad’s failing-in-its-own-way business), Amandeep manages to make both of his lives work — keeping a relationship with Pakistani artist Nasreen, played by Rashmika Mandanna, while staying faithful to the job he does for this country. The suspense builds as Amandeep puts his cover on the line and he has to make some terrible choices by betraying those closest to him to complete his mission.
Themes and Performances
At the heart of Mission Majnu are patriotism and sacrifice It shows us the truth of some unsung heroes — spies doing their nerve-wracking work undercover in hostile territory while also risking it all to aid their country. It stresses the number of personal sacrifices intel officers who live a double life after, to give themselves their happiness.
The leading antagonist is Sidharth Malhotra, who appears with a fantastic enactment. His Amandeep Singh is accessible in both his vulnerability as well as his courage and he credibly shapeshifts from a soft-spoken tailor to a quick-thinking agent. Seems like Malhotra has hit the right chord with patriotic characters from Shershaah.
For her Bollywood debut, Rashmika Mandanna brings a subtle playfulness to the role of Nasreen. While she is ancillary to the spy story, her character gives a soulful gravitas to this movie. The chemistry between Malhotra and Mandanna is real, and that is one rare emotional anchor in this intense narrative.
Paramjeet Sethi and Kumud Mishar give good support too as veteran actors. While Sethi is Amandeep’s handler, he plays the character with a straight face and no filter policy while Mishra plays the senior RAW official who tells them why the mission is important.
Cinematography, Direction, and Music
Mixing the tense tone of a spy thriller with moments of intense emotion, Shantanu Bagchi’s direction succeeds in keeping the film gripping. A clever attention to detail brings 1970s Pakistan convincingly to life, right down to the costume and setting.
The cinematography by Bijitesh De is pretty good when it comes to the hand-to-hand combat and chase sequences, but overall nothing to write home about. The color palette in the film is muted and dark, which perfectly suits a mission of such significance as well as the dark history of espionage.
The songs ‘Dilbar’ and High Rated Gabru come as restricted to the really serious affair, but which is however within an excellent way and suitable for that location.ProductionMusic by Tanishk Bagchi and Arko in Nirvaan case of track record are tone braising. The room feels eerie with the engaging background score and though the songs are fewer, they play as per the narrative blending emotion without cutting into the progressing storyline.
What Worked
A Wild Storyline:Inspired by true events, the plot is quick and exciting through the espionage world. Indian-Pakistani tension in the 70s, on which quite a few decades down history plays new romanticism to the narrative;
SOLID PERFORMANCES:Sidharth Malhotra shines as a patriotic RAW agent, Rashmika Mandanna adds layers of goodness to the plot
Realistic action set pieces: The film shies away from the over-the-top set pieces and instead focuses on realism — this only serves to make it all more believable.
Handling of the Emotional Layer:Many spy thrillers only concentrate on the action, but Mission Majnu ensures that there are high emotional stakes at play, particularly in the relationship between Amandeep and Nasreen.
Areas for Improvement
This Spy Was A Little Too Cliched: The plot is very intriguing but at the same time a few moments also come across as cliched, especially if you have watched other films of this genre before. Some more of the unexpected twists would have made Mission Majnu more thriller.
Supporting Cast Development: The film is strong with the leads, but some of the supporting cast, particularly those in MI6 could have been fleshed out more to add depth/meaning to their roles.
Rashmika Mandanna: Minimal Screen Time – While her role as Nasreen is grounded enough to add an emotional weight to the narrative, a longer arc exploring Nasreen could have helped in creating a delicate balance between Amandeep’s personal and professional challenges.
Audience Reception
Mission Majnu has been, largely, praised by the demographic of audiences who have embraced some of Bollywood’s earlier experiments in more earnest, fact-driven storytelling. The spy thriller is a fresh take on the undiscovered intelligence operations of India, and audiences who enjoy espionage dramas love it. Film highlights the patriotism: “It’s a very good way to show unity but mainly with those who love stories of Unsung heroes.
The by and large positive reviews of the film have placed Sidharth Malhotra in a position beyond his comfort zone where people can acknowledge both his athletic self but also see another side to him– a man with tenderness and depth. Apart from this, the performance of Rashmika Mandanna has been praised as a good debut in Bollywood.

Mission Majnu makes for a good addition to Bollywood espionage thrillers, nuanced by historical relevance and an engaging script. It does well by balancing action and emotion, giving audiences just enough adrenalin with some tear-jerking personal sacrifices along the way. Far from perfect, but an essential watch for fans of espionage dramas and someone curious about India’s history during its conflicts.
With an impeccable performance by the lead cast, good direction and a crisp storyline Mission Majnu is a tale of those unsung heroes in our country who go unnoticed.
