Plot Summary
The film tells the story of Mahendra (Rajkummar Rao) and Mahima (Janhvi Kapoor) who are brought together as a couple due to their love for cricket. Their tale takes the audience through the highs and lows that they experience in the machinations of professional sports and pursues every individual’s ambition versus social responsibility.
The narrative at the center of the film is their relationship on and off the grounds. The film also focuses on the dreams of each individual, their hurdles, their impossibilities, and eventualities as absorbed through the game, compelling them to develop as players and themselves.
Performances
Rajkummar Rao takes over as Mahendra and is brilliant as a determined cricketer. The transformation of his character from being a mediocre player to finally emerging as a pro is proved realistic and sensitive too.
Janhvi Kapoor is evolving as an actress and in her role of Mahima she imbues warmth with passion. She enhances the emotional content of the story with Rajkummar Rao and she has done many commendable emotional scenes and intense cricket matches.
The supporting characters are also effective as far as creating the tension and drama is concerned especially during the final moments of the film where the crickets are played.
Direction and Cinematography
In the cricketing sequences, Sharan Sharma’s talent as a director comes out because they are caught vividly with all the excitement. The film does not bore the viewers with a slow pace because it consists of drama and cricket matches in equal proportions. Training montages, emotional arcs, and victory in matches have been showing identical features with the amazing underdog sports stories, only this time around there is the modern version of it.
The photography particularly during the cricket matches is extremely cool. Every single match’s sequence is made to put across the emotions of the game in such a way that one feels the action rather than watching it.
What Works The dialogue is intense, and new actors Misiu Wajda and Kiran Rao give commendable performances.
Sports Effect: The sporting activities particularly that of cricket are progressively captured with several edges of tension.
Inspirational Plot: A very delightful tale of dreams, struggles, and relationships. Direction and Visuals: Good direction focuses on certain key aspects of cricket, along with a good set of visuals.
What Could Be Better The Predictable Nature?
This is the case with even the underdogs’ sports film, and some twists were already clear and this once again ruined the suspense factor. Supporting Characters: Most actors performed incredibly well in their leading roles: however some actors, in their supporting roles, could have been more developed enhancing the overall storyline.
