Set to release in 2022, the movie has a perfect blend of suspense and drama with hard-hitting courtroom scenes that provide a fresh angle to this emergency landing incident. It also stars Amitabh Bachchan, and Rakul Preet Singh in pivotal roles and the movie is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Nikkhil Advani, Toap Runal Adhvani, and Krishan Kumar. Here as part of our Runway 34 review, we dive into the story, performances, direction, and effect of the film on the viewer to see if it has what it takes to please its audience.
Plot Summary
PLOT: Runway 34 tells the tale of Captain Vikrant Khanna (Ajay Devgn), a self-taught pilot whose arrogance is top-notch, who finds himself amidst the biggest event of his life when what starts as another routine flight for Khanna -this one from Dubai to Kochi- turns into an almost fatal situation And takes the audience through how much Khanna has left in him post that ordeal. When the flight ventures into a thunderstorm Vikrant performs a dicey emergency landing. The tension mounts as we build to this crucial moment in the film with everything leading up to it and keep you on your toes while telling its result.
The crash landing aftermath is subjected to a high level of scrutiny as investigator Narayan Vedant (Amitabh Bachchan) from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), comes to evaluate if it was a daring save or a desperation attempt. The courtroom drama that forms the film’s second half sees Vedant and Khanna going head-to-head, as we are told some key revelations about the flight and the pilot.
The Powerful Performances By Ajay Devgn & Amitabh Bachchan
Ajay Devgn Capitalizes On The Role of Captain Vikrant Khanna and does not miss guiding. It provides a layer of depth to the character, a seasoned yet flawed pilot. The late stage of the film, where Vikrant is judged since he utilizes his little influence into an occupation somewhere else with elegance carries a fine balance of Devgn to head as much certainty and peril simultaneously. His restrained, adult-like portrayal would convince the audience to care for him.
Amitabh Bachchan has that commanding screen presence, and it is most visible during those courtroom sequences when he plays the disciplinarian cop Narayan Vedant. His sharp dialogue delivery and a certain screen presence overshadow most scenes, especially the ones he shares with Devgn. In a way, Bachchan’s character is the voice of reason, questioning Vikrant Sethi and therefore bringing to front an ethical tussle in the movie.
Another very important character in this whole story who changes the track of the plot is Rakul Preet Singh as co-pilot Tanya Albuquerque. Her performance is highly effective in a minor role as a young pilot carrying the burden of responsibility and survivor’s guilt.
Direction and Screenplay
The star Ajay Devgn turned his avatars into creations of history, creating a nice visually enriching drama with some high-octane action scenes — holding the directorial cap directly. Flight, of course, is impressive and deeply involving—particularly the nail-biting emergency landing sequences that plunge viewers right into the turbulence. The heart-stopping moments are a function of Devgn the director who ensures that you feel the pulse-raising intensity.
That said, the film does bog down and lose momentum somewhat in its second half, when it becomes more of a courtroom drama. There are trade-offs, but despite the captivating verbal sparring between Devgn and Bachchan, some of these scenes would benefit from being slightly sharper to not take away from the promise set up in the first half. Fortunately, the screenplay by Sandeep Kewlani and Aamil Keeyan Khan keeps you involved and gives some interesting ideas about moral obligation, heroism, and accountability.
Photography and CGI
Runway 34 is visually stunning, for which the credit goes to Aseem Bajaj’s cinematography. Some of the in-flight scenes are well done, especially when it comes to those involving a storm or landing. Inside the cockpit, dynamic camera angles make you feel like the walls are closing in right before disaster.
It does have good Visual Effects (also during the landing scenes) and also captures some real life with no doubt. The practical and CGI effects are blended very well to the extent that you feel like you’re there experiencing the shaking of the plane and the storm around.
Background Score & Sound Design
Amar Mohile’s background score elevates the tension and drama in this flick. It very much works to bolster the tense nature of the aerial moments and the intense nature of the court scenes And an honorable mention here to the sound design, which wonderfully captures all the highs and lows of an air journey with those engines roaring and winds buffeting around, making you feel a part of it.
Themes and Social Commentary
Runway 34 tackles a lot of aspects such as accountability, heroism, the line between being brave and reckless, etc. This documentary poses a lot of crucial probes related to Auditors especially pilots and the aviation industry as a whole. All these contradictions are reflected through the character of Captain Vikrant, which almost makes the viewers debate in their heads how they could have handled situations if they were ever faced with similar circumstances.
It also takes a look at the bigger issue of how we as a society and institutions respond to crises, who point fingers, and who acknowledge true bravery. The courtroom drama is as much about a legal battle as it is a moral inquiry into what defines heroism and when personal pride overshadows professional duty.
Audience Reception
Runway 34 opened to mixed to positive reviewsfrom critics and audiences. The intense first half of the film also got a positive nod, as did the performances and production value. Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan were praised the most for their powerful performances. However, some of the audience thought that the slow pace in the second was a bit overdone which made it boring as compared to the first half.
With some of the film glossing over a little slower, Runway 34 was praised for doing something new with the aviation thriller as well as keeping your eyes glued to the screen with strong performances and a tight story.
Film Rating
The way we see it at Filmshub24 is that Runway 34:
Plot: 7.5/10
While the second act could have been tightened up (as any work should), that still meant an interesting and suspenseful narrative full of moral dilemmas.
Performances: 9/10
Ajay Devgn and Amitabh Bachchan, provide some solid performances that sour the film up a little bit. And even Rakul Preet Singh sparkles in a supporting role.
Direction: 8/10
Ajay Devgn’s direction is reliable, especially where the action and song sequences are concerned. It is a minor quibble, however, and overall van Schie manages to get the mix of drama/suspense right with the only lull predictably coming during courtroom scenes.

You get superb cinematography with some decent visual effects which makes every aviation sequence more realisticand intense.
